Some members of Colorado family may have been strangled, court documents reveal

(CNN)New court documents filed in the case of a Colorado man suspected of killing his pregnant wife and their two daughters suggest that some of the victims may have been strangled. They also asked the court to allow defense expert Richard Eikelenboom to take swabs from the bodies. “I have a lot experience taking samples from dead bodies getting good results after strangulation,” Eikelenbloom wrote to the court. “The hands of the children should be sampled as well.” It is unclear whether a judge ordered the coroner’s officer to swab for DNA. The first motion, according to documents, was filed 20 minutes before the autopsies were scheduled to begin. Defense attorneys did not indicate in the court filings what motivated …

Read Emma Watson’s powerful letter to the woman whose death helped legalize abortion in Ireland.

via Jorge Figueroa/Flickr Six years ago, Dr. Savita Halappanavar died in an Irish hospital from a septic miscarriage after being denied an abortion. But her death would not be in vain. It would go on to inspire a generational change in the country that led to the legalization of abortion. Back in 1982, Irish voters approved the Eighth Amendment which gave an unborn fetus the same protection as its mother, making it nearly impossible for women to have an abortion. So when Dr. Savita Halappanavar was admitted to the hospital for a septic miscarriage, doctors would not remove the fetus until they could no longer detect a heartbeat. According to Halappanavar’s husband, doctors knew the fetus would not survive, but …

New blazes fan fresh fears in California as some return home

On Monday, after driving a winding road across charred slopes and past smoldering ruins of other houses in Decker Canyon, Rasmussen wrapped Berkeley in a bear hug of thanks after finding their two houses still standing untouched by fire. “Without him, I knew it was going to be a loss,” Rasmussen said. “He just went above and beyond.” Fire officials lifted some evacuation orders Monday while warning Southern California residents to remain vigilant as strong winds fanned new fires. While some returned home, others were told to leave. As one major freeway reopened, another was closed. The return to normal for some was juxtaposed with the arrival of chaos for others, illustrating how quickly conditions can turn when erratic Santa …

Retroactive Abortion? Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, a Catholic, Resurrects Death Penalty

What might be called retroactive abortion in particular circumstances is better than okay with Gov. Pete Ricketts, as he may well demonstrate on Tuesday when a double murderer is scheduled to become the first person executed in Nebraska in two decades. We need to have capital punishment in his state, says Ricketts, an avowed Catholic who otherwise adheres vocally to his churchs pro-life edicts. He allows, theres a number of people expressing their difference of opinion with regard to this, but the people of Nebraska have been very clear. Those expressing their opinion happen to include Pope Francis, who early this month revised the Catechism to declare the death penalty inadmissible as an attack on the inviolability and dignity of …

“There Are Absolutely NO Words. I Was Absolutely Sobbing.” After 6 Miscarriages & 9 IVF Transfers, Couple Welcomes Baby Through Surrogate

ShareTweet “After getting married in October 2012, we knew we didn’t want to wait to start a family. However, that wait turned out to be much longer than we ever anticipated. After 9 IVF transfers with 15 embryos, 5 egg retrievals, and suffering 6 miscarriages, my best friend offered to be our surrogate. It was the kindest offer we had ever received. We transferred 2 embryos into Rachel in January and found out we were expecting our rainbow baby girl to be due September 2018. I never could have guessed she’d be born on my late father Scott’s birthday — whom she is named after. I lost my dad suddenly 3 years ago. I knew then I would name my baby after him. After all …

Anti-Vax Conspiracies On The Internet Are Getting Weirder

The anti-vaxxer movement has been growing over the course of 20 years, leaving unnecessary measles outbreaks in its wake. In 2018, there were 40,000 confirmed cases across Europe. A big part of the growth is due to online communities, where anti-science information can spread around like wildfire, and lies can sometimes spread faster than the truth. And once someone’s got the wrong idea about vaccines, it’s incredibly difficult to change their mind.  For years anti-vaxxers have mainly been spreading the misinformation that vaccines cause autism, a myth that has been debunked many times. Now it seems the job of myth-busting may get even more difficult, as anti-vaxxers are diversifying their nonsense. A new study, published in the journal Vaccine, looked at anti-vaxxers on Facebook and found …

Her Son Was a High Priest of Santa Muerte. He Died in a Hail of Bullets. Now She Runs a Huge Cult.

ECATEPEC, Mexico The visions appear so often these days that they cause little stir. The tall, wiry figure of the late Jonathan Legara is still a regular at his temple, while his followers say he imparts wisdom as they dream. It is 10 years since assailants gunned down the 26-year-old in a hail of some 250 bullets. But the murder of one of the most influential spiritual leaders in Mexicos recent history has not diminished Santa Muerte, the skeleton folk saint he revered whose name in English would be Saint Death. In fact, the movement he left behind has strengthened since his passing. The fallen preacher has assumed a saint-like status, while his bereaved mother, Enriqueta Vargas, skillfully guides his …

Dear dads: Have the courage to be vulnerable, especially online

Image: Vicky leta / mashable Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with. On the morning of September 18th, 2016, like many parents, I woke up to the voices of tiny people in my ear yelling, “Get up, Daddy!” I didn’t know what time it was, but there was no way in hell I was getting out of bed yet. It felt like I’d only been asleep for fifteen minutes and my head was throbbing, as if a bunch of Smurfs started …

A pregnant woman was jailed for refusing to make her kids take a paternity test. Now she’s fighting back.

It’s hard to believe that a pregnant woman who hasn’t been accused of a crime could be held in jail for over a month, but here we are. This world is full of all kind of wrongs that need to be righted. When Adrianna Thurman refused to submit her two children to a paternity test requested by her ex-boyfriend Erwin Rush, she was held in contempt of the St. Louis Family Court and thrown in the slammer for 39 days. Because Thurman’s case was civil and not criminal, she was held without being charged for a crime, didn’t have access to an attorney, and was not eligible for bond. Thurman, who was seven months pregnant at the time, wasn’t given …

He lost his parents as a child. Now hes fighting so no child in Kenya endures the same.

When Jack Hisard was a young boy, he lost both his parents, one after the other, to diseases that could have been cured — if they had lived in other parts of the world. First, Jack lost his father to malaria when he was only four years old. “I remember that night clearly in my head because his last moments were spent sitting next to me in our small grass thatched hut in the village,” he writes in an email. “There was no hospital nearby where he could be treated.” Jack’s Father.
