Report: Pregnant Women in ICE Custody Claim Neglect, Trauma

Some pregnant women in ICE detention camps say they are not receiving the medical treatment they are guaranteed by law, and are instead subject to inhumane treatment which may have caused them to miscarry, according to a harrowing Monday report from BuzzFeed News. In December, BuzzFeed reports, the Trump administration overhauled an Obama-era mandate that pregnant women should only be detained in extreme circumstances. Instead, ICE is now required to stop detaining women once they have reached their third trimester, and to ensur[e] pregnant detainees receive appropriate medical care including effectuating transfers to facilities that are able to provide appropriate medical treatment. Many once-pregnant detainees, however, told BuzzFeed that they were repeatedly denied adequate medical care, and were subject to …

Why we’re celebrating a three-month-old law

(CNN)You don’t have to be a hardcore sports fan to understand that no team should be celebrating victory after only the first quarter of a game. Reasonable people might ask, then, at this early stage, why did the Trump administration host a First Step Act celebration just three months after passing the landmark criminal justice bill? We formed an unlikely bipartisan coalition — made up of formerly incarcerated people, celebrities, corporate executives, pastors and grassroots leaders — and found ourselves working alongside Jared Kushner, whose father had been to prison. Together, we helped pass one of the most significant rewrites of federal prison and sentencing reform laws in decades. And in a move that surprised many, President Donald Trump endorsed …

A Nazi Submarine Loaded With Tonnes Of Toxic Cargo Continues To Lie On The Seabed

The legacy of a Nazi submarine continues to “haunt” the waters of Europe. In February 1945, just months before the Nazis were defeated, a German Navy U-boat was torpedoed down by the British Royal Navy in the waters off the Norwegian coast, killing all 73 of its crew. In a last-ditch attempt to supply their allies in Japan, the submarine was en route with a very important delivery: 65 to 70 tonnes of mercury.  Some 70 years on, U-864 still lies in the North Sea near the city of Bergen, even amid continued fears of highly toxic liquid mercury seeping out into the surrounding environment. The wreckage of U-864 was found by the Norwegian Navy in March 2003. Not long after, the …

The Secret About Birth Control Pills That Every Woman Needs To Know

Nine percent of women of reproductive age take the Pill worldwide. What most of them don’t know is that the seven placebo pills taken in the final week of the four-week cycle are unnecessary. That’s right – you do not have to have your period at all. Instead, you can take the Pill continuously for as long as you like. (Although it is always a good idea to check in with your health provider first.) “It’s not actually necessary to take a break from the contraceptive pill for a withdrawal bleed, it doesn’t do any harm to skip this break or take the combined oral contraceptive pill continually,” Karin O’Sullivan, the Clinical Lead at FPA, a sexual health charity based …

5 things you’ve probably never considered about being pregnant while in prison.

As Americans, we have inherited some pretty huge problems with our criminal justice system. People of color face incarceration at disproportionate rates compared to white people, and many people go to jail or prison when they should be getting mental health treatment instead. A lot of these problems remain under the radar because for many Americans, prisons are out of sight and out of mind. Lately, thanks to the hard work of activists, filmmakers like Ava Duvernay, and other advocates, criminal justice reform has been in the spotlight. But there are still plenty of injustices that take place behind the walls of prisons and jails that we don’t talk about enough. A prime example? The way most pregnant people are …

In a way, this is still true for Burger King Russia – the brand just took the fire to a bizarre new level. 15 “Normal” Social Behaviors That Everybody Seems To Have Forgotten Are Actually Really Creepy

Us humans are a funny bunch and that’s putting it mildly. Since the dawn of time, our lives have been governed by ever-changing societal norms – and more than a few of these deserve to be consigned to the history books. Take a woman’s virginity, for example. While men are encouraged to pop their cherries as soon as possible, a woman’s V-plates is supposed to be cherished because, y’know, men are allowed absolute bodily autonomy and women should be virginal until their wedding night. It’s these outdated norms – many of which are influenced by the historical patriarchy – that have led to some “normal” creepy behaviors amongst us humans. But once we take the time to actually think about them …

Here’s The Surprising Way Meghan Markle Will Spend Her First Birthday As A Royal

When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry with all the splendor of a Disney princess in May, it was hard not to believe that she’d found her happy ending. But, as the world learned from Princess Diana’s tragic story, marrying into the “Firm” doesn’t guarantee a happy life, even if it is a luxurious one, and now Meghan has had to face up to the reality of what it involves. As a former actress, Meghan was arguably well-prepared for a life in the Royal Family. Unlike many of Harry’s other girlfriends, she was used to dealing with crowds of people and being photographed at every available opportunity, but back then, Meghan – who is a self-proclaimed feminist – did not have …

Hamleys pulls slime toy amid safety fears

Slime became one of 2017’s biggest crazes, with millions of people sharing pictures on Instagram and watching DIY slime-making videos on YouTube. But many of the toys use the mineral borax, which contains boron, to help create their stickiness. Over-exposure to boron can cause skin irritation, diarrhoea, vomiting and cramps. At very high levels it may also affect fertility or cause harm to unborn children in pregnant women. Examples of slimes tested by Which? The DIY Slime Kit, made by Essenson and available from Amazon, contained a purple slime that had four-and-half times the legal level of boron. HGL’s Ghostbusters slime, which can be bought in Smyths Toys Superstores, had more than three times the limit. Fun foam, made by …
