Democratic attorneys general group will only endorse candidates supporting abortion rights

(CNN)The group for state Democratic attorneys general issued a warning to potential candidates on Monday — back abortion rights, or we won’t back you. “As the battle for reproductive rights unfolds at the ballot box, in statehouses, and courtrooms across this country, there is no group of elected officials better positioned to lead the fight for our rights than state Attorneys General,” said Ellen Rosenblum, the group’s co-chair and Oregon attorney general, in a statement. “That is why electing Democratic AGs who are committed to protecting reproductive freedom, especially for the most vulnerable communities, has never been more important.” The requirement would apply to potential funding, digital resources and strategic partners from the group starting in the 2020 elections. Smoking Just One Cigarette During Pregnancy Doubles Risk Of Sudden Infant Death

Mothers who smoke any number of cigarettes – even one a day – during their pregnancy more than double their risk of seeing their infant die before their first birthday, according to new research published in Pediatrics. Women smoking an average of between one and 20 cigarettes a day increase the odds by 0.07 with each cigarette smoked – but even women who smoked before their pregnancy saw an increased risk in their child dying from sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) – an unexplainable death of an otherwise healthy baby less than a year old. To understand how SUID deaths relate to maternal cigarette use, researchers analyzed data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on smoking habits …

Belgium’s First Wild Wolf In A Century Presumed To Have Been “Maliciously Killed”

Naya, the first wild wolf in Belgium in over a century, has been missing since spring. Following an extensive search for the missing she-wolf, local conservation groups and environment agencies now believe she was killed along with her cubs.  “The nature investigation cell of ‘Nature and Forest’ assumes that the she-wolf was maliciously killed,” the Agency for Nature and Forests, the Flemish government’s environment agency, said in a statement on Monday, September 30. “It can be assumed that if the she-wolf was killed, the perpetrators of the environmental crime would have deliberately invaded the she-wolf’s nesting area to search for the she-wolf with her cubs on the nest and kill them there.” Naya was first spotted on Belgian soil in January 2018 after …

Planned Parenthood Declares A State Of Emergency Amid Abortion Bans

Planned Parenthood declared a state of emergency on Thursday in response to the extreme Dr. Leana Wen told HuffPost.   women’s health organization released a report Thursday afternoonwhich details every abortion restriction and ban enacted in the last few weeks. States including Georgia, Missouri have all banned abortion as early as the first trimester. “I come from this as a former public health official, having called states of emergency before for other crises,” Wen said, “but unlike a state of emergency that’s called after natural disasters or infectious diseases, this is a man-made disaster that’s years in the making and it’s endangering women’s lives.” most extreme legislation earlier this month, banning all abortions from the time a person is “known to be pregnant” …

Transgender man loses challenge to be named father

Media playback is unsupported on your device Media captionHow one man gave birth to his own baby A transgender man, who has given birth to a child and does not want to be described as “mother” on a birth certificate, has lost a legal battle. Freddy McConnell wanted to be registered as “father” or “parent”. But a High Court judge ruled the status of “mother” was afforded to a person who carries and gives birth to a baby. He said while Mr McConnell’s gender was recognised by law as male, his parental status of “mother” derives from the biological role of giving birth. Mr McConnell, a journalist at the Guardian, has told the BBC he plans to appeal against the …

US government watchdog details trauma experienced by separated migrant children

Washington (CNN)Migrant children who were separated from their parents as part of the Trump administration’s controversial “zero tolerance” policy last year experienced “heightened feelings of anxiety and loss,” caregivers from US government shelters told the Health and Human Services inspector general. The report provides yet another snapshot of how the Trump administration’s policy of separating families at the US-Mexico border affected children — this time, from some of the staff tasked with caring for them. The policy, which ended last June, resulted in the separation of thousands of families. “According to program directors and mental health clinicians, separated children exhibited more fear, feelings of abandonment, and post-traumatic stress than did children who were not separated,” according to the report, which …

They had abortions late in their pregnancies. These are their stories

(CNN)Strangers have called them monsters, trolled them on social media and said their living children should be taken away. Their darkest moments are judged and politicized by figures who know nothing about them. They feel like involuntary pawns in an ugly, vicious game they didn’t ask to play. We also talked to young women who felt desperate, alone, terrified and misled. One had been told she could not get pregnant because of various health conditions, including missed periods. Then, when she did, she unwittingly visited a faith-based pregnancy center, hoping to get an abortion. They told her she wasn’t as far along as she was, which made getting an abortion elsewhere more complicated. A normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks. …

This State’s New Abortion Bill Is So Restrictive It Might As Well Be A Ban

Mark Wilson/Getty Images News/Getty Images Mississippi’s New Abortion Law Is Wildly Restrictive By Mehak Anwar a day ago The latest news when it comes to abortion access is not reassuring. On Thursday, March 21, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant signed a bill that bans abortions in the state once the fetus’s heartbeat can be heard. The bill, which is poised to be one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, could ban abortion as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, around the time early traces of fetal heartbeat can be perceived. Elite Daily reached out to Bryant’s office for comment on the bill and his remarks, but did not immediately hear back. Mississippi’s new abortion law is wildly restrictive, …

Telemedicine Makes It Safe to Get Abortion Drugs in the Mail

Every restriction on access to abortion draws the metaphoric walls closer. On who can dispense drugs, on what clinical tests are required first, on how far along the pregnancy can be—the rules are all designed to delay, deter, and delegitimize. It’s a Death Star Trash Compactor. The box around abortion gets smaller and smaller. That’s policymaking; technology, meanwhile, tends to see boxes as something to think outside of. A long-awaited study published this week in the journal Contraception offers a way around tightening regulations: telemedicine. Abortion medication provided by mail, administered by a practitioner working via videoconference, could safely enlarge the geographic footprint of clinics and providers. “Many clinics already use telemedicine for other services,” says Elizabeth Raymond, a researcher …

Youre Not Getting Enough Sleepand Its Killing You

The whole world is exhausted. And it’s killing us. But particularly me. As I write this, I’m at TED 2019 in Vancouver, which is a weeklong marathon of talks and workshops and coffee meetings and experiences and demos and late-night trivia contests and networking, networking, networking. Meanwhile, I’m sick as a dog with a virus I caught from my 3-year-old, I’m on deadline for what feels like a bazillion stories, and I’m pregnant, which means I need coffee but can’t have too much, and need sleep but can only lay on my left side, and can’t breathe without sitting propped up with a pillow anyway, since I can’t safely take any cold medication. According to neuroscientist Matthew Walker, I’m doing …
